March 2012 - More Trees
Please' Industry Marketing Campaign : Nursery
and Garden Industry Victoria
The Nursery & Garden Industry
in Australia is inviting all of the green
industry to join its new ‘More Trees Please’
phase of the Improve Your Plant Life Balance
Campaign.
“An important aspect of the
campaign will be to show the real value of trees
in urban communities, and we hope that any
business involved in greening our environment
will support and adopt the theme of ‘More Trees
Please’ to ‘Improve Your Plant Life Balance in
2012,” said the Chairman of NGIA, Craig Norman.
“The research shows the
positive benefits of trees to our health and
wellbeing, as well as their economic value. In
the green industries including landscapers,
garden designers, landscape architects, parks
and gardens managers we all know that but we
need to be promoting trees much more in our
urban environments.”

WATER RESTRICTIONS TO EASE IN MELBOURNE
Melbourne households will be able to
water gardens at any time and wash cars at home for
the first time in four years when water restrictions
are eased to Stage 2 from 1 September 2010.
Premier John Brumby announced
yesterday that for the first time since 2006,
Melburnians will be able to:
“Melbourne’s water storages are
recovering well and are expected to hit 40 per cent
very soon as a result of recent welcome rain,
outstanding water saving efforts by households and
the Government’s major water projects,” Mr Brumby
said.
Nursery & Garden Industry of Victoria
CEO, Mr. Steven Potts said
“In line with our estimates when we
moved to stage 3, the NGIV forecast that this
increased flexibility will provide the industry with
a yearly boost of more than $100 million. The bulk
of this increase to be experienced throughout spring
and early summer – so with the fantastic winter
rainfall we are receiving, this to be a fantastic
Spring for our members”
Mr Brumby stated. “Stage 2
restrictions is a real win for Melbourne’s veggie
gardens, as extra thirsty plants can now be watered
at the end of searing summer day with a watering
can, bucket or trigger nozzle in addition to your
morning and night watering options on your watering
day,”
It is the Government's intention to
move all Victorian towns off severe water
restrictions to provide households with more
flexibility on how they use water."
Melbourne's water storages are 39.9
per cent of capacity while at the same time last
year they were 27.8 per cent full – around an
additional 6 month’s worth of water.
Mr Brumby said the water saving
efforts of Melbourne households in recent years had
been fantastic.
Water Minister Tim Holding said
Target 155 would continue under Stage 2 water
restrictions.
“Stage 2 restrictions just means
there is more flexibility in how that water is used.
We still expect people to employ commonsense and not
water during the heat of the day when a lot of water
is lost to evaporation.
Households and businesses are able to
apply for a 28 day exemption to establish new warm
season grasses.
